Bald Eagle Days

Join Villa Louis and area attractions and businesses as we celebrate our national bird! The Villa Louis Museum Store will open at 10 a.m. with mansion tours available at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Cancelled – League of Women Voters Tea at Knowlton House

Saturday, April 18 | 2 PM – 4 PM

Enjoy an afternoon tea, women’s history, and fashion as we celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s right to vote! Learn from Villa Louis curator Mary Antoine about how Prairie du Chien became the first League of Women’s Voters organization in the state to own a chapter house. Textiles expert and former Wisconsin Historical Society curator Leslie Bellais will give the feature presentation on Flapper and Suffragette Fashion. Please note, this event will take place at Knowlton House, 109 W. Blackhawk Ave., in Prairie du Chien.

Opening Day Spring Clean Up

Join us on opening day and help spruce up the Villa Louis grounds. Raking, picking up sticks, sweeping walks and cleaning up the flower beds are on our “to do” list for the day!

British soldiers march in line to re-enact the battle of Prairie du Chien.

30th Annual War of 1812 Re-enactment

Saturday-Sunday, July 18-19 | 10 AM – 4 PM

Hear the roar of the cannon! This weekend event features a historic encampment and battle re-enactment on Wisconsin’s only War of 1812 battlefield, now the lawn of the Villa Louis estate. Watch the British assault on U.S. Fort Shelby in a battle scenario Saturday and Sunday afternoon. Tour the camps and learn about military life in 1814.

40th Annual Villa Louis Carriage Classic

Friday-Sunday, Sept. 11-13 | 10 AM – 4 PM

Come see the Midwest’s most elegant and lavishly-appointed equine sport driving event! Some of the region’s finest horses and over 100 new and restored carriages compete in a variety of arena and cross-country events. Learn how this event descends from the Dousman era when Villa Louis was known as the Artesian Stock Farm and was home to one of the Midwest’s finest racehorse farms. Admission includes tours of restored Villa Louis Mansion, Artesian Stock Farm & Antique Carriage Exhibits and carriage rides!

Behind the Scenes Tour

Take a peek behind the velvet ropes of a historic house museum. This tour presents a more in-depth look at the Dousman family and their home and gives a glimpse into the day-to-day inner workings of this restored Victorian mansion. Each round of behind-the-scenes tours features the care and keeping of a different object from the Dousman family collection. Tours include visits to the nooks and crannies of this restored mansion, including the attic and basement!

Breakfast in a Victorian Kitchen

Saturday, Oct. 10 | 8:30 AM – 1 PM

Step into a working Victorian kitchen and bring your appetite! This hands-on cooking workshop for adults takes participants on a culinary tour of the late 19th century through the preparation and consumption of a Victorian breakfast – using the foods, utensils, and technology of the time. Family style breakfast is prepared and served in the kitchen, followed by a tour of the estate.

Kids in the Kitchen

Saturday, Nov. 14 | 9 AM – Noon

This event brings children into a working Victorian kitchen for a hands-on cooking and craft workshop, taking them back in time by using the utensils, recipes, and technology of the 1890s. Activities include making cookies, popcorn balls, and a craft, as well as a kid-focused tour of the mansion. This workshop is for kids in grades 3-8.

Winter Events

Victorian Home for the Holidays

Dec. 5 | Noon – 7 PM         Dec. 6 | Noon – 4 PM
Dec. 12 | Noon – 7 PM       Dec. 13 | Noon – 4 PM

These afternoon tours will get you into the holiday spirit! The mansion will be decked out from top to bottom in its Victorian finest, with Christmas music from the restored Steinway and sweet treats & hot cider by the warmth of the woodstove. Tours depart on the hour.
